The owner of the Upper West Side restaurant, featuring a herring sandwich made wildly popular in Tel Aviv, would only say that she was "sad" about its demise.
“I am mostly focused on good ingredients and good flavors,” said Sasha Zabar, a member of the Jewish culinary dynasty.
Fred Schuster, who escaped Germany on a Kindertransport, opened S&S Bakery in 1960. He's still a presence today.
