Official portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill and other world leaders show them as noble, wise and better than the rest of us. Israeli artist Amit Shimoni brings them down to our level in HIPSTORY, his series of world leaders drawn as hipsters.
For International Women’s Day this past Sunday, Shimoni focused on women leaders instead, and his new series SHEPSTORY features esteemed figures like Angela Merkel, Margaret Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Israeli subjects like Golda Meir and Shulamit Aloni. While these strong, controversial female leaders shaped discussions about Israeli-Arab relations and civil rights, they were also humans – and we too can be empowered to make changes.
Shimoni tells Jewniverse he next wants to focus on non-elected leaders like Rosa Parks and Rosa Luxembourg. “This process had again emphasized for me how the formal and informal leadership was dominantly masculine, and extremely unequal,” he wrote in an email. “And to think I am only talking about recent history.”
