From the beginning of the month of Elul until the end of the High Holiday season Jews traditionally recite Psalm 27 each morning and evening. You might have heard it, the one that starts “The Lord is my light and my salvation, who shall I fear?”
You’ve probably never heard it like this.
Danny Raphael is a singer, rapper, and poet born in London. He’s also studying to become a rabbi. As a member of the Jewish-Muslim hip-hop collective Lines of Faith, and on his own, Danny has released nearly two dozen great tracks on YouTube and toured internationally. Our favorite thing about this new cover version (if you will) of Psalm 27 is just how completely he owns the words. “If an army should rise against me, if my promises were revealed as empty,” he says, “I would only ask to dwell in your house in humility, thanks for the gift you have given me.”
It can be hard to find the time to pray every day, even for a few minutes. Still, we somehow find the time to watch countless YouTube videos. Here’s one thing that inspires us to do both.
