With spring just around the corner, Israel’s hitherto mild winter suddenly turned vicious Sunday night. Accompanied by lightning and thunder, high winds and freezing rain swept the coastal plain and turned to snow in the hill areas. By noon Monday, Jerusalem and the Judaea region of the West Bank were blanketed with snow. In the arid Negev, wadis (dry river beds) overflowed with torrents pouring down from the hills and sand storm warnings were posted.
