The need for building inexpensive synagogue structures to fulfill the limited budgetary requirements of young congregations was stressed by Rabbi Jay Kaufman, vice president of the Union of American Congregations, in his opening address last night at the three-day National Conference and Exhibit on Synagogue Architecture and Art, which is taking place at the Barbizon Plaza Hotel.
More than 150 architects, artists, rabbinical and lay leaders of congregations affiliated with the UAHC are attending the conference at which various problems of synagogue architecture are discussed. An extensive exhibit of synagogue architecture is displayed to enable the delegates to view the outstanding examples created since the first such conference in 1947.
