Chairman J.W. Fulbright of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is being informed by the State Department that the Administration no longer objects to the Ribicoff resolution condemning Soviet oppression of its Jews.
Acting on a State Department letter, which opposed a foreign aid bill amendment as one which might do Soviet Jewry more harm than good, Sen. Fulbright last year arranged deletion of the amendment, although many Senators favored it. This year, Sen. Abraham A. Ribicoff, Connecticut Democrat, reintroduced his measure as a Senate resolution with the support of 67 co-sponsors of both parties. The apparent change in State Department position makes it likely that the resolution will be adopted at this session. Hearings have not yet been scheduled, although Sen. Ribicoff has asked Sen. Fulbright to arrange hearings at the earliest possible date.
Only two weeks ago, Assistant Secretary of State Douglas MacArthur 2nd, reaffirmed the State Department’s opposition to a proposal that the United States formally raise with the USSR the question of the treatment of the Jews in Russia. Mr. MacArthur had voiced that official stand in a letter to Sen. Hugh Scott, Pennsylvania Republican.
