The State Department, responding to reports of an alleged Israeli-based assassination threat to Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, denied it had ever been informed of any such threat.
Department spokesman Robert Funseth declared Friday that the Department does not normally get reports from the Secret Service about threats against the Secretary of State and that the Department’s policy was not to comment in any way about stories on specific threats. However, he added, “We have never been informed of any threats involving Israeli political parties. or any group within an Israeli political party. including specifically the Likud.”
The statement followed publication of a story by the New York Daily News that a “radical splinter” group in the opposition Likud, or “perhaps” the Jewish Defense League, was involved in the alleged plot, in which $150,000 purportedly was collected to engage two European killers to assassinate Kissinger. The United Zionists Revisionists and the JDL both repudiated the assassination report as untrue and slanderous.
