Sir George Lewis, prominent Anglo-Jewish barrister, was killed yesterday at Mont-reux, Switzerland, when he fell from the steps of the Grand Hotel, under a railway train.
Sir George Lewis, who was 58 years old, was the son of Sir George Lewis, who founded the famous solicitors’ firm, Lewis £ Lewis. For two generations English society entrusted their legal affairs to this firm. They were associated chiefly in recent years with divorce cases but as early as 1870 they were famous as prosecutors of criminals, particularly those in banking cases, and in the latter part of the last century they became the foremost criminal lawyers in England. Few of their cases were ever brought to eourt. Most of their ellents relied on their ability to make settlements and it was said that three fourths of their bnsiness was of this nature.
Sir George was born September 12, 1868. He was the son of the first baronet, Sir George Lewis, and Elizabeth Alberstadt. He succeaded his father to the baronetcy in 1911.
