Private advices said today that Sir Elly (Eleaszer Silas) Kadoorie, Bagdad-bron Jewish philanthropist, who was taken prisoner by the Japanese in Hong Kong, had died at Shanghai on Feb. 8. He was 77.
Upon his arrest by the Japanese three years ago Sir Elly’s extensive properties were confiscated, but the public has heard nothing of the circumstances of his captivity. He had homes and business headquarters in both Shanghai and Hong Kong.
Both Sir Elly and his brother, the late Sir Ellis Kadoorie, were benefactors of Jewish institutions and aided in the movement to improve Palestine as a Jewish homeland. Sir Elly’s numerous philanthropies, particularly in the founding of schools and hospitals in the Near and Far East, won him decorations from a number of governments. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1926. The Chinese government rewarded him the Order of the Order of the Brilliant Jade. He had two sons, Lawrence and Horace.
