The vessel Haviva Reik carrying 470 visaless immigrants has been captured off southern Palestine by a British naval patrol, it was reported tonight. The ship is being escorted into Haifa.
The passengers are believed to have embarked at a Greek port. Their vessel was sighted by British reconnaissance planes about 60 miles from Palestine. Five destroyers immediately sped to the scene.
Approximately 1,000 visaless immigrants of the 1,827 who arrived here last month on the “Max Nordau” will remain in the Athlit camp until next month’s quota of immigration certificates is issued, it was announced today. Eight hundred and twenty-seven of the immigrants have already been released on certificates granted to the Jewish Agency under the current quota. Efforts by the Jewish Agency to secure the release of all the passengers were unsuccessful.
The first meeting of Jewish partisans and ghetto fighters who arrived in Palestine recently from Europe was held today in Tel Aviv under the auspices of the Histadruth, the Palestine Federation of Labor. Many of the partisans were reunited for the first time since they separated in the forests and the ghettoes of Poland. The meeting was called to discuss physical and psychological problems in connection with the absorption of displaced Jews.
