Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett; Dr. Nahum Goldmann, co-chairman of the Jewish Agency; Professor Zachariah Chafee, Jr. of Harvard University; and composer Ernest Bloch, have been named recipients of the Stephen Wise Awards for 1951, it was announced today by Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress. The awards each bear a cash value of $1,000.
In announcing the recipients, Dr. Goldstein hailed Mr. Sharett for “building a position of international respect and understanding for Israel.” Professor Chafee was termed “the nation’s foremost interpreter of the constitutional basis of freedom of speech and civil liberties.”
The award to Dr. Goldmann was made for “his lifetime of service to the Jewish people” and “statesmanlike guidance and skillful leadership on all the critical problems by which the Jewish people has been confronted in a chaotic and uncertain world.” Ernest Bloch was honored for “translating the Jewish soul and the Jewish idiom into major works of enduring significance which have enriched contemporary Jewish culture.”
