It is the duty of the British Government to “preserve the Jewish population of Palestine from Himmler’s gas chambers and firing squads,” it was stated today by the New Statesmen, leading British liberal weekly, in an article on the situation in the Middle East.
Discussing the military aspects of the campaign, the publication declares that “instead of wasting men and material in attempting to delay the occupation of Egypt, all strength should be concentrated on Palestine, Cyprus, Syria and the Persian Gulf.”
Lord Strabolgi, Laborite peer, writing in the Evening Standard tonight, suggests that Haifa be used as a base for the British Mediterranean fleet. “Haifa has a magnificent harbor though lacking in engineering facilities,” he states, “and half a million Jews can be relied upon to guard the hinterland.”
