“The ideal and practical services “of the ORT, Organization for Jewish Rehabilitation through Training, were emphasized last night in a message from President Roosevelt sent to former Governor Herbert H. Lehman on the occasion of the dinner tendered to Mr. Lehman by the American ORT Federation. More than 2,000 labor leaders attended the function.
“It is most fitting,” the President said in his message, “that the labor division of the American ORT Federation should pay tribute to former Governor Lehman. Not the least of his activities have been condemned through many years with the exemplification of the ideal of practical service which actuates ORT. It is indeed fortunate that one with Herbert Lehman’s humanitarian instincts and varied experience in administrative work is now in association with our Department of State, further serving his fellow-men as Director of Foreign Relief and Rehabilitation. It is a pleasure to be associated with those who are honoring Herbert Lehman. Please extend my hearty greetings to them and to him.”
Other messages of greeting to Mr. Lehman came from Vice President Henry A. Wallace, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins and Governor Thomas E. Dewey, who in the name of all the people of the State wished Mr. Lehman “strength and success in the task now facing him.”
