A Jewish soldier, Avraam, accused of desertion from the Roumanian army and sentenced to five years imprisonment, in the fortress of Jassy, was rehabilitated by the Roumanian military court in Czernowitz.
Avraam was taken prisoner during the warfare activities. When he returned after the armistice from Germany, charges of desertion were brought against him. The retrial in Czernowitz proved his innocence.
Interesting testimony was presented to the court by Roumanian officers who were called as witnesses. According to the testimony, the command of the Roumanian army formed special Jewish units of 100 men to be used to cover the retreating regiments. These Jewish units were known among the soldiers as “the death consecrated”. In many of these units 80 of the 100 men were killed.
