The S.S. Marine Jumper, the first U.S. DP ship to sail from an Italian port directly to America, left Naples this week with 875 refugee passengers. The transport includes 673 Jews who waited for more than four years to secure passage to the U.S.
The contingent brings to 917 the number of Jews who left Italy under terms of the Displaced Persons Act of 1948. Earlier, a transport of 244 Jews left, via the port of Bremen, Germany, for the United States. An additional 2,000 Jews now in Italy have registered for emigration to America.
A large group of Ustachis, Croation supporters of Hitler during the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia, will be permitted to enter the United States under the present Displaced Persons Act, it was reported here. About 50 of the fascists are reported only awaiting completion of screening at processing centers at Bagnoli and Naples before they leave for the U.S. Among these, it was reported, is Dr. Vlado Dubicanac, one-time commander of the infamous Koprivnica concentration camp in Croatia where in 1942 and 1943, thousands of Jews were tortured and killed. Another reported member of this group is Stjepan Busic, noted anti-Semitic Commissioner for Jewish affairs in the puppet Croat state.
