Rabbi Solomon Breuer, one of the veteran leaders of Jewish orthodoxy in Germany, died in Frankfurt yesterday at the age of 76.
Dr. Breuer was the son-in-law of Dr. Samson Raphael Hirsch, contemporary of Abraham Geiger, and the outstanding champion of Orthodoxy in Germany in its fight against the Reform movement during the last century. With the publication of his works, “Nineteen Letters on Judaism,” and the “Horeb,” he laid the foundation for modern Orthodoxy.
Dr. Solomon Breuer was born in Patsch Hungary. He studied at Wurtzburg, Germany. He was a rabbi in Hungary when he was called to succeed his father-in-law in Frankfurt forty-five years ago. He was rabbi of the Religionsgesellschaft of Frankfurt and was the father of Dr. Isaac Breuer, leader of the Agudath Israel.
