HENRY PEREIRA MENDES, RABBI EMERITUS OF THE SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE SYNAGOGUE, DIED TODAY AT HIS WESTCHESTER HOME AT THE AGE OF 85. HE WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF THE CONGREGATION IN 1886.
BORN IN BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, HE OCCUPIED A PULPIT THERE BEFORE COMING TO THE UNITED STATES. HE HELD IMPORTANT POSITIONS WITH THE JEWISH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY AND THE RABBINICAL COLLEGE, WAS A FOUNDER OF THE NEW YORK BOARD OF JEWISH MINISTERS AND A PAST PRESIDENT OF THE UNION OF ORTHODOX JEWISH CONGREGATIONS. HE WAS AUTHOR OF SEVERAL BOOKS.
