Captain Sir Edgar Britten of the Queen Mary — Britain’s challenge for ocean supremacy — denounced persecution of Jews in Germany in an address in the superliner’s synagogue during the long maiden voyage, it was revealed today.
Frederick H. Samuel, correspondent of the London Jewish Chronicle, said on disembarking that most of the estimated 500 Jews on board attended services in the synagogue — the first to be included in the original plans of an ocean liner.
Several other of the ship’s officers visited the synagogue at various times.
The Queen Mary has three kosher kitchens, one central kitchen and two supplementary ones. About 100 persons ate in the special restaurant in the third-class section where an all-Jewish staff was employed.
