The central ORT headquarters reported today that more than 20,000 persons, double the number of four years ago, will receive vocational and technical instruction in ORT schools in Israel this year.
The largest increase was reported among young people under the age of 18, who accounted for 8,232 students in 1960 and will exceed 18,000 this year. The number of ORT teachers in Israel rose from 568 to 762 in the four-year period, and the number of classes from 311 to 540. There are currently 43 trade and technical ORT schools in Israel in 31 cities and towns, the report showed, and more than one-third of all vocational high school students attend ORT schools.
In the field of apprenticeship training, the number of students rose from 1,608 to an estimated 6,000 or more this year. Plans call for facilities for 12,000 to 15,000 apprenticeship training students in the next few years. Most of the apprentices are from Oriental and North African backgrounds.
