Pledges of support from many Christian and Jewish leaders of Newark marked the second day of the eight-day drive of the German Relief Campaign of the Joint Distribution Committee, bringing the total pledges to substantially more than $50,000.
Newark’s drive for funds opened last night, when two hundred persons prominent in communal affairs met to give the campaign initial impetus. Fifty thousand dollars were pledged before the drive became four hours old, one-half of which was the personal contribution of Louis Bamberger, business and social leader of Newark. Support received a non-sectarian aspect when followers of all creeds swelled the fund with their own contributions and enlisted as volunteer workers.
Speakers at the dinner which opened the drive included: Mayo# M. C. Ellenstein, Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, Judge William B. Dill, and Edgar Bamberger, campaign manager.
