The day after the closing of the Day-Jewish Journal, leaving only the Forward as the nation’s major daily Yiddish newspaper, a new Yiddish daily was launched here yesterday under the name Yiddische Zeitung (The Yiddish Newspaper). Its publisher is Sender Deutsch, a 50-year-old native of Czechoslovakia who has published Der Yid for 19 years and Der Yiddischer Kvai (The Jewish Fountain) for five years. Each has a circulation of 6-7,000.
Deutsch distributed 11,500 copies of Yiddische Zeitung yesterday in four of the five boroughs (all but Staten Island, which may be added later). He said today it was too early to determine how many had been sold. He edits and offsets all three papers at Deutsch Printing and Publishing Company, a Brooklyn firm of which he is president.
Deutsch, a New Yorker for 23 years, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency he expected the Yiddische Zeitung to cost him $250,000 the first year and hopefully less thereafter. He said the 15-cent four-pager would seek to attract both the older and the younger generations of Orthodox New Yorkers.
It will, Deutsch said, cover “all news,” with emphasis on Jewish news, and will appear daily except for Saturdays and Jewish holidays. Subscription rates were not yet formulated. He describe Der Yid as a “religious political biweekly” with a “strong” position on Zionism, and Der Yiddischer Kvai as an “education and family” journal.
