Moses Z. Margolies, dean of the American rabbinate, died at his Summer home here this morning as a result of a blood infection. He was 86 years old.
Rabbi Margolies was the founder and later honorary president of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of United States and Canada. Among the other positions he held were chairman of the board of education of the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Yeshivah and head of the United Charities of Jerusalem.
His wife and their two children, Hyman Margolies and Mrs. Ida Newman, were at his bedside when he died. Funeral services were arranged in New York City for Wednesday.
Born in Lithuania, Rabbi Margolies was ordained a rabbi 60 years ago. He came to America 47 years ago and became rabbi of the Boston Orthodox Community. Later he came to New York.
