During the past ten years, the Jewish population of the metropolitan area of Montreal has increased by 17,372 persons, or 26.4 percent, and the total number of Jewish people estimated to be living here today is 92,000 according to Louis Rosenberg, research director of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
The fact that the Jewish population of Montreal has increased by 26.4 percent places the Jewish rate of increase on a par with the French Canadian, whereas the tendency in most Canadian cities has always been for the Jewish rate of increase to be smaller than the Protestant or Catholic rate, due to a smaller birthrate and lower immigration.
