Melvin Goldstein Named Administrative Vice Chairman of U.J.A.

Melvin S. Goldstein, organizational executive, who for 17 years has played a prominent role in the rescue and rehabilitation of Jewish men, women and children in post war Europe and Arab lands, has been named administrative vice chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, it was announced yesterday by Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice chairman.

Mr. Goldstein, as assistant secretary of the Joint Distribution Committee in Europe, helped in organizing the programs which provided urgent relief and welfare aid to Jews in more than the countries. He has been with the UJA since 1951 when he arrived from the JDC’s European headquarters in Paris. The new administrative vice chairman will bear a large share of responsibility for directing the nationwide campaign of the UJA

Mr. Goldstein joined the overseas staff of the JDC in Lisbon in 1941 and he served as assistant secretary of its European Executive Council. In 1945 he moved to the newly reestablished JDC headquarters office in Paris to assist in the administration of the organization’s relief and welfare programs. Three years later he was secretary of the special conference on International Jewish Relief and Rehabilitation which brought together Jewish leaders representing 30 countries, including the surviving Jewish communities on the Continent.
