Residents of a predominantly Jewish area in this city, along Fairfax Avenue, complained to a committee of the City Council here today against repeated attacks by motorcyclists wearing Nazi uniforms and the light sentences meted out to the hooligans when some were arrested.
The complaint was made to the City Council’s police, fire and civil defense committee, by the Jewish Survivors of Concentration Camps and an organization of aged citizens, who asked that the city pass an ordinance prohibiting the wearing of Nazi or Ku Klux Klan costumes.
According to the spokesmen for the two groups, Henry Birnbaum and Mrs. Doris Rothenberg, a group of Nazi-costumed motorcyclists, who had assaulted Fairfax Avenue citizens last November, were given light sentences when arrested. Many of the assaults in the area, they told the members of the Council, are not reported for fear of retaliation.
