Justice Bernard L. Shientag of the City Court has been appointed by Governor Roosevelt as justice of the Supreme Court in the First Judicial District to fill a vacancy due to the recent death of Supreme Court Justice Nathan Bijur. The term for which Justice Shientag has been appointed expires at the end of the year, but it is expected that he will receive the Democratic nomination for a full term of fourteen years, beginning Jan. 1 next.
Justice Shientag is a member of the executive committee of the American Ort and the American Jewish Congress and a director of the Y. M. H. A. He is also a director of the Consumers’ League and of the American Association for Labor Legislation and has served at various times as a member of and counsel to the State Housing Commission, the Child Welfare Commission and the Cloak and Suit Mediation Commission. Before his appointment to the bench, he was Federal Director of Employment of the State of New York.
Justice Shientag, who is a close personal friend of ex-Governor Alfred E. Smith, was appointed to the City Court by Mr. Smith in 1924, when the latter was Governor. Before that he had served as State Industrial Commissioner under an appointment by the Governor.
