Associate Justice Joseph Weintraub, of West Orange, was named Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court here by Gov. Robert B. Meyner. He will succeed the late Chief Justice Arthur T. Vanderbilt, an internationally known jurist who headed the New Jersey court system from 1947 until his death last June.
The Governor’s appointment of Justice Weintraub, the only Jew on the State Supreme Court, was made simultaneously with the naming of a Catholic and Protestant to the posts of Associate Justice on the same court. Described as a “lawyer’s lawyer, ” the new chief jurist is 49 years old and the youngest member of the seven-man court. He is single and lives with his widowed mother, Mrs. Minnie Weintraub, in West Orange.
