Mayor Ian Maltz of Johannesburg stated today that Israel’s policy, which he sees as calling for peace in the Middle East, is of vital significance to the Union of South Africa “because whatever happens north of our Union affects our own security.” Mayor Maltz made this statement at the opening of the Israeli pavilion at Rand, where the country’s biggest trade fair, the annual Easter Show, is being held.
There are strong bonds of friendships between Israel and South Africa, the Mayor declared, and it is important to strengthen the bonds through increased trade between the two countries. Another speaker at the ceremonies was Gabriel Doron, Israel’s Consul-General here, who said that the gradually increasing Israeli-South African trade is of mutual benefit to both countries.
