Rabbi Scholom Eliezer Rogozin, 70 years old, of 642 Monroe Street, Brooklyn, was arrested on a warrant issued by Supreme Court Justice Lazansky on a charge of libel. The rabbi was held at the Raymond Street jail until midnight, when he was released on $2,500 bail.
Four organizations brought charges against Rabbi Rogozin. The warrant was issued at the request of Leon Kamaiky, publisher of the “Jewish Daily News” and chairman of the Central Relief Committee, and Rabbi Israel Rosenberg, vice-president of this committee. The complainants demand $100,000.
The legal steps were taken by the organizations because of a series of pamphlets issued by Rabbi Rogozin during the last seven months in which he attacked the orthodox Jewish leaders and rabbis who were active in the war relief work. It was stated that hundreds of orthodox Jewish contributors to these funds demanded that action be taken against Rabbi Rogozin.
Rabbi Rogozin was called to a rabbinical court several times in order to submit evidence in support of his charges or to withdraw them. However, he continually refused to do so.
