Frank Cohen, New York industrialist, who is spon(?)ring the plan to settle 25,000 Jewish DP families in Quoddy Village, Eastport, (?)ine, for industrial training prior to emigrating to South America, conferred here (?)day with Jewish labor leaders at a conference convoked by the Jewish Labor Committee.
The participants, who included representatives of the International Ladies (##)rment Workers Union, the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union, and the United Hebrew (##)ades, said later that they felt that the project involved no use of “slave labor,” had been feared by labor groups.
Meanwhile, following a meeting with the Eastport City Council, a War Assets administration spokesman stated that the city plan to use Quoddy Village as a DP (##)aining center was ineligible for “public benefit allowance,” since the project would primarily industrial, rather than educational. The decision, if upheld in Washington, will make it difficult to set up the project, since Eastport would be obliged (?) purchase the site at a figure near its assessed $396,055 value, and also the necessary equipment.
