Disappointment with the riot compensations being paid by the Palestine government continues to be manifested by the Jews here. As more people are beginning to receive their compensatory awards the feeling of disappointment is spreading. A few instances gathered at random show what is causing the disappointment.
The Sephardic community of Hebron which claimed $32,115 for the destruction of three synagogues and other communal buildings was awarded $880. Nissim Kastel, claiming $1,250 received $40. A Jew from Mekor Hayim named Shnurman, who asked $2,750 in damages for a burnt and looted house was given $160 while M. Klinger of Safed who sought $55,000 received $700.
As more of those who sought compensation receive their awards the protests mount. Other instances are the orphanage in Safed for which $15,000 was asked and $720 was received, a Jerusalem Jew sought $3,200 and got $85, the family of the Hebron Yeshivah student, Krasner, who was murdered, claimed $25,000 and received $570. Many of those who were injured and filed claims have received nothing. A sister of Rabbi Dvoretz, who had her hand cut off and her house in Hebron looted, was awarded $12.50 and another Hebron woman whose damages were officially assessed at $2,800 received $25.
It is being alleged here that Hassan Albudeiri, an Arab lawyer of Jerusalem, who had some personal belongings burned, has been awarded $1,740. During the Inquiry Commission hearings the commissioners were brought to Albudeiri’s house by the Arab counsel to prove Jewish looting and burning during the riots.
