James D. Zellerbach, industrialist, civic leader and diplomat, has been named United States Ambassador to Italy succeeding Mrs. Clare Luce, it was confirmed here. Mr. Zellerbach was born in San Francisco nearly 65 years ago.
Mr. Zellerbach has been associated with a number of Jewish institutions and is a national vice-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He has served in a number of government posts, including as a member of the U. S. delegation to the United Nations, U. S. representative to the International Labor Organization and head of the Economic Cooperation Administration mission to Italy.
