The Jewish community of Bangor has for the past few years boasted of two service clubs, one for the men, called The Veritans, and the other for the women, known as the Szold Club. Through these instruments they have been able to share in the activities of the general community and have been given prominent and equal representation in all the affairs of the city. The president of the local Red Cross is a Jew, James Canners. The Jews are likewise represented on the directorate of the Chamber of Commerce by Myer Segal of the Veritans Club. The other service clubs, like the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions, likewise have Jewish members. On stated occasions, all the service clubs come together and mingle socially.
As for things specifically Jewish, the Jews are quite active when it comes to fund gathering, so that their contributions to the United Palestine Appeal are quite considerable. For the last Emergency Relief Fund, Bangor sent almost $1,000.
Religionsly, the Bangor community is as good as dead, although there are four synagogues, a foreign rabbi, a Talmud Torah and other necessary Orthodox appurtenances. For the last three pears a small group has been having services for the High Holidays at a hall, with a student of the Jewish Theological Seminary at the head But their Jewish interests and with the Day of Atonement.
