An Israeli woman diplomat has become Israel’s new Ambassador to UNESCO, the first in five years to hold that rank. Yael Vered presented her credentials to UNESCO Director General Amadou Mahtar M’Bow this week at the UN agency’s headquarters in Paris. She is a graduate of Hebrew University in Jerusalem with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and botany, and a master’s degree in Islamic studies.
As a member of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, Mrs. Vered was deputy director of the West European division in 1967-68 and became director of the important Middle East and East Mediterranean division in 1969. She was a founder of a community youth center in Jerusalem in 1956 and the following year was a founding member of the “Khan” theater, which she served as a member of its board of directors.
