A new approach for an agreement between the Histadrut and the striking seamen’s union has been made, it was learned here today. The strike is in its fourth week.
At the same time, it was announced that an agreement made yesterday between the union and the Dizengoff Shipping Company to sail the S.S. Dizengoff was called off by the union today. The seamen refused to unload the vessel in the event the Histadrut ordered dock workers to boycott the vessel, as had been demanded by the company. It was stated that the seamen refuse to slam the door on negotiations with the labor federation which now appear near.
The Histadrut is reported to have expressed a willingness to deal with the seamen, but not with the members of the union’s secretariat. The maritime workers are said to be demanding that all seamen be returned to their jobs. including those recruited by the Histadrut to sail struck ships. However, it is understood here that the seamen are prepared to compromise on this issue.
