Israel rejects a call from Pope John Paul II issued in the form of a comprehensive apostolic letter addressed to Catholics in Israel and around the world that there should be a “special internationally guaranteed status” for Jerusalem “so that one side or the other cannot place it under discrimination.”

Israel issues a categorical denial of an NBC News report that it is supplying arms to Nicaraguan rebels fighting the Sandinista junta. But Contra leader Enrique Bermudez tells NBC News: “We receive some weapons from Israel. The weapons were taken from the PLO in Lebanon” during the war.

There are 13 million Jews throughout the world, according to the American Jewish Year Book published annually by the American Jewish Committee. The book says that 95 percent of the world’s Jews live in nine countries with some 5.728 million in the U.S. and 3.374 million in Israel.

About 5,000 people march through the Hessian town of Oberaula to protest the reunion there of veterans of the SS “Tokenkopf” — Deaths Head — battalion, a unit with a notorious history of slaughtering Jews and others during World War II.
