A wave of terrorism in Rumania was climaxed today when two anti-Semitic Iron Guardist students at the University of Cluj in northern Transylvania shot and wounded, probably mortally, the rector, Dr. Florian Stefanescu-Goanga. The university official, who fought the Iron Guard when he was Undersecretary for Education and invoked strenuous measures to suppress anti-Jewish disorders, Lay near death tonight with two bullets in his heart. His assailants, whom identified, were believed to be still at large.
A policeman who rushed to the educator’s aid was instantly killed. The authorities identified the assassins as active members of the proscribed Fascist Iron Guard. The attack occurred while the rector was on his way from his home to the faculty building. When he was in the Cabinet, Dr. Stefanescu-Goanga took stern measures to suppress political activity among students and professors, forbidding political discussions and wearing of political insignia in university building.
Further violence occurred in Transylvania last night when, according to an official account issued today, three members of a theater audience were killed and II others injured in the panic following explosion of two hand grenades during a performance of a Yiddish Troupe in T Mishoara (Temesvar). The grenades were thrown from the balcony as Sidy Taal, a Yiddish actor well known in East Europe, walked on the stage. Forty Ukrainians and several Germans were arrested on suspicion of wrecking a synagogue and a number of Jewish-owned factories in Czernowitz (Cernauti) and Puna.
