Ilse Koch, the “Witch of Buchenwald” who was sentenced yesterday to life imprisonment for atrocities against the inmates of the Buchenwald concentration camp, was lodged today in the women’s prison at Aichach, near Augsburg. Her lawyer said that he would appeal the verdict to the West German Supreme Court.
It was the second life sentence for her. The first, imposed by an American war crimes court in 1946, was commuted to four years and she was released last year. She was immediately rearrested by the Germans. Yesterday’s sentence was issued by a German court of three judges and six lay jurymen. The trial lasted seven weeks.
