Representatives of Hungary’s Jewish and Protestant communities conferred for two days at the Protestant Center in Debrecen on the possibilities of increased cooperation between the two faiths in social activities and other fields. Bishop Tibor Bartha, who headed the Calvinist delegation, welcomed the Jewish group led by Imre Haber, chairman of the Jewish community, and Chief Rabbi Laszlo Salgo.
Haber said, in his opening remarks, “We intend to use all the available opportunities to further strengthen our ties.” The Bishop tendered a kosher banquet for the Jewish delegation where the Protestant church choir gave a concert that included many traditional Jewish songs. The Calvinists and Jews are the largest religious minorities in Hungary which is overwhelmingly Catholic.
