Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir resigned Wednesday from the governing Likud Party, which he helped found. Shamir, who has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of betraying the ideology of Likud’s founders, told the Associated Press he joined the far-right Herut Party, led by Ze’ev “Benny” Begin, another Likud defector. As part of its platform, Herut opposes any further territorial concessions to the Palestinians.
