Martin Bormann, Hitler’s deputy, is alive and taking refuge in a small town in southern Brazil, near the Paraguayan border, the Sunday Times stated here yesterday on the basis of a report from a former corporal in the Nazi SS.
The ex-corporal, Erich Karl Wiedwald, told the newspaper he had last seen Bormann at Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1965. He claimed he had helped Bormann escape from Berlin after the Nazis were defeated in 1945. He named three other prominent ex-Nazis who, he said, were living in South America.
These men are Gen. Richard Glucks, a Nazi officer responsible for the property of gassed Jews, allegedly living in Chile, where he had “passed” as a Jew; the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele, who had been the “selection” doctor at Auschwitz; and Heinrich Mueller, the immediate superior of Adolf Eickmann. Wiedwald was quoted as saying that Mengele lives in Paraguay, while Mueller lives in northeastern Brazil.
