The medical and sanitary needs of Russian Jewry form the principal part of the discussions at the Conference called by the provincial committee of the “OZE”, an association for the improvement of health conditions among Jews.

Seventy accredited delegates are taking part in this conference, which was opened Monday evening. In addition, a number of representatives of friendly organizations are participating The establishment of a Jewish World Union for sanitary relief, to be known probably as the Red Mogen Dovid, on the lines of the International Red Cross, will engage the attention of the Conference.

The unexpected appearance of Prof. Albert Einstein was the occasion for many cheers. The scientist who was made an honorary chairman of the Conference, declared this meeting showed that all Jews were united on the question of public health, and that the efforts of the OZE merited the sympathy of the whole world.

The distress of the Jews of Russia should force those engaged in improving health conditions to redouble their efforts, said Eliezer Rosenthal, in opening the Conference.

The Health Department of the Ministry of Interior sent a representative to the meeting. He declared the work of the OZE was essential. inasmuch as it helped “to shield all countries bordering on the East against the epidemics of the East”.

Dr. Klee, representing the Jewish community of Berlin, expressed the hope that the East European Jews and those of the Western countries would unite in solving the problem of building up Jewish health and Jewish physique.

Representatives of the Jewish World Relief Conference, the ORT and the J.D.C. welcomed the Conference. The Sanitation Department of the League of Nations sent a telegram extending its greetings to the meeting.
