Dr. Stephen S. Wise was honored on the completion of thirty years as rabbi of the Free Synagogue at a dinner last night at the Hotel Commodore attended by about 1,000 persons. It was announced that $200,000 has been raised in the $300,000 campaign for a new synagogue building.
President Roosevelt sent a message praising Dr. Wise for serving “your own people and every American ideal.” Another message was received from Dr. Albert Einstein, who had been scheduled to speak. Among the speakers were Mayor LaGuardia, the Rev. John Haynes Holmes, Borough President Samuel Levy, Morris Rothenberg, Louis Lipsky, Ludwig Lewisohn, Judge Julian W. Mack, Max Brauer, Harry Hirschfield and Louis Nizer, who was toastmaster.
