Rabbi Moses Cyrus Weiler, Chief Minister of the Johannesburg United Jewish Progressive Congregation, has resigned his post effective in December, the congregation announced today. Rabbi Weiler, 49, came to the Union of South Africa 24 years ago and has since built the Progressive movement from very small beginnings to a point where it now boasts 10,000 members and has constituencies in nine cities.
The congregation, in a glowing tribute to Rabbi Weiler, revealed that he had rejected all its appeals to remain in the post. Rabbi Weiler, a vice-president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, refuses to remain at the post because he feels he has not fulfilled his mission there, the congregation statement disclosed.
