Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president of the American Jewish Committee, said here today it was “urgent and important that German youth be warned” about the true nature of the Hitler period and the Nazi persecution of Jews.
Dr. Slawson made the statement to the press here during a stopover en route to West Germany where he will meet with a group of leading West German educators and sociologists to obtain first hand information about the methods now being used to educate the West German younger generation about Hitler’s Third Reich, and to exchange views on means of combatting the “appalling ignorance” of German youth about the Hitler era.
Dr. Slawson pointed out that recent surveys by West Germany television reporters and educators have shown that only one German school student in ten has been said to have grasped anything about the real nature of Hitlerism and that the highest estimate of the number of Jews murdered by the Nazis was, according to the students, in the range of 30,000. Dr. Slawson is being accompanied by Zacharia Shuster, AJC director for Europe and North Africa.
