Dr. Marcus Ehrenpreis, Chief Rabbi of Sweden, died here today. He was 82 years old. An active Zionist since youth, he served as secretary to Dr. Theodor Herzl in 1897 and helped him to organize the first World Zionist Congress in Besle.
Born in Lemberg, Galicia, Dr. Ehrenpreis received his Ph.D. in 1895 from the University of Berlin. He then served as rabbi in Bulgaria until 1914, when he was appointed Chief Rabbi of Sweden. He has written a large number of books and articles in Hebrew, Yiddish and German. He also translated into Swedish numerous works of Jewish writers. In 1935, the King of Sweden conferred on him the title of Professor. Earlier, he was decorated by the King with the Order of Chevalier of the North Star.
