David Goldbaum, 71, mayor of Ensenada, Mexico, died here yesterday. He was born of a Jewish father who came from Poland in the early fifties and settled in Mexico. Together with a number of his schoolmates, he was kidnapped by the “Tiger of the Allicas,” a notorious Mexican bandit whose habit was to abduct children of wealthy parents and hold them for ransom.
Goldbaum’s father paid a heavy ransom and sent him to school in San Francisco. Later he was graduated from the Colorado School of Mines and returned to Ensenada. Goldbaum surveyed the town and the greater part of Lower California, becoming a recognized authority on exploration and minerology. During his travels he collected valuable relics and presented to his town the Museo Regional. Goldbaum was mayor of Ensenada for many years and was a personal friend of Presidents Diaz, Calles and Gil.
