Chaim Herzog, Israel’s former United Nations Ambassador, says he is concerned at possible moves by the European Economic Community to revise UN Security Council Resolution 242 as a basis for a Middle East settlement. However, he believes the Europeans will not go ahead with this suggestion unless they first gain the tacit encouragement of the United States.
Herzog, who is in London for the centenary celebrations of ORT, gave his views to the Board of Deputies of British Jews. He also said he was not unduly alarmed by President Anwar Sodat’s cancellation of the autonomy talks, noting that this was the fourth time the Egyptian leader had behaved in this way since the negotiations with Israel and the U.S. had begun.
