The creation of a “center for Hebrew culture and language in Palestine” was proposed by Ch. N. Bialik, Hebrew poet, at the second gathering of communal workers and Hebrew workers held here for the purpose of discussing the question of maintaining Hebrew cultural standards in Palestine in connection with the recent increase of immigration.

The Center should include representatives of the Hebrew Writers’ Association, the Hebrew Philological Committee, the Teachers’ Organization and all cultural organizations in the country. The tasks of the Center are to enlarge the existing cultural institutions, the publication of literature for the new immigrants, to establish evening classes, a people’s university, publishing text books, translating the classics from the European languages into Hebrew, etc. The proposal was supported by Achad Ha’am.

A temporary committee was elected which will call a conference to take final steps in the matter.
