For the second time in its history, Cape Town has chosen a Jew as its mayor. Louis Gradner was recently elected mayor of the city. The first time was in 1904, when the late Mr. Hyman Liberman was chosen mayor for the first of four successive years.
Mr. Gradner, who was born in Bialystok, Poland, in 1882, was brought up in the East End of London, and was educated in the Jews’ Free School. He came to South Africa when he was 17. He is a master printer and director of the South African Broadcasting Company, Ltd. He has been a member of the Cape Town City Council for nearly ten years and in 1931 was deputy mayor.
He is a past president of the Cape Town Jewish Orphanage past treasurer of the Jewish Board of Guardians, and has been actively associated with every Jewish institution in Cape Town. He is now chairman of the South African Fund for German Jewry.
